Using Hemingway App to Make Your Copy Easy to Read

Transcript

I just wanted to jump in here and share with you something that I've learned through writing and editing copy.

Now, you've probably heard of the Hemingway app tool, and it's great for editing your copy.

One of the great things about the Hemingway app is it will tell you the grade level of your copy.

And I tend to write at least early on, like around the eighth or ninth-grade level.

And what you're shooting for is the third and fourth-grade level.

And what I noticed with Hemingway is a lot of the time to bring that grade reading level down, it's not about finding the big words and making them smaller.

It's more about breaking those sentences down into smaller chunks.

Often, I found that I would try to get too much impact from one sentence.

I would try to add too much stuff into it or make it carry too big of a load, I guess, is what I'm trying to say.

So what I've learned to do is when I edit my copy before I even put it in the Hemingway app, I think in smaller sentences I think of how small can I make the sentence?

And it still makes sense, and make sure that it's not carrying too much of the load itself.

So if you never used Hemingway, definitely it's free.

Put your stuff in there and see what all it finds.

You'll find that it helps make a sentence shorter.

It helps make the whole overall copy flow better.

And the more you use it, the more you'll find that while you write,

you make those corrections before you ever go to Hemingway.

It just makes you a stronger writer overall.

So if you're looking for a way to bring down that grade level on your copy, to make it easier to read and have a more significant impact, then check out the Hemingway app, and I'll catch you next week.

Thanks.
